1st Luso-Brazilian Conference on Open Access

1st Luso-Brazilian Conference on Open Access LogoOn the 25-26 November 2010, the 1st Luso-Brazilian Conference on Open Access, jointly organized by the Documentation Services of the University of Minho, the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN) and the Brazilian Institute of Information on Science and Technology (IBICT).

This conference takes place following the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministers of Science and Technology of Portugal and Brazil in October 2009 (see Signing of Protocols on Cooperation in Science, Technology and Information Society between Portugal and Brazil), and giving continuation to the Conferences on Free Access to Knowledge, organized by the University of Minho in 2005, 2006, 2008 (see 3rd Conference on Free Access to Knowledge) and 2009 (see 4th Conference on Free Access to Knowledge), the last two under the project Open Access Scientific Repository of Portugal (RCAAP) of the initiative and with funding of the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC), and co-funded by EU funds of the Knowledge Society Operational Programme (see Open Access Repositories).

Forum for the Information Society - Digital Economy

DE – Digital Economy, UMIC – Knowledge Society Agency, IP LogoOn the 12th October 2010, at the Portuguese Catholic University in Lisbon, it will be held the Forum for the Information Society – Digital Economy, jointly organized by ACEPI – Association Electronic Commerce and Interactive Advertising and the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) (see the Forum agenda (text in Portuguese) with links to presentations) as part of the Portugal |Internet Week’10 (text in Portuguese).

The purpose of this Forum is to discuss some of the main aspects of the Digital Economy, in the context of the Digital Agenda for Europe 2010-2020, launched on the 19th May 2010 by the European Commission Communication "A Digital Agenda for Europe" as the first flagship initiative of the Europe 2020 Strategy for Growth and Employment adopted by the European Council (text in Portuguese) on the 17th of June 2010 (see also European Council Sets Key Objectives of Europe 2020 Strategy for Employment and Growth (text in Portuguese) in the 26th of March 2010), and supported by the Council of EU on Transport, Telecommunications and Energy (text in Portuguese) of the 31st May 2010.

IBERCIVIS - Citizens Donate Personal Computer Time to Science: Projects SOLUVEL and AMILOIDE

Logotype of Portugal-Spain initiative IBERCIVISOn July 1, 2011, at the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra, within the initiative IBERCIVIS – Your Computer Does Science, the project SOLUVEL (site in Portuguese) was launched and the results of the project AMILOIDE (site in Portuguese) were presented. IBERCIVIS is a volunteer computing initiative, launched in July 2009 (see IBERCIVIS Initiative: Citizens Can Offer Their Computer Time to Science) in cooperation with Spain, allowing to bring together dispersed computing resources, in particular personal computers, by distributed computing techniques similar to Grid Computing (see INGRID – Portuguese National Grid Initiative) for the development of scientific projects. The computer becomes an open window on science, creating a channel for direct dialogue between researchers and society.

AccessMonitor - Automatic Evaluator Developed by UMIC for the W3C Web Accessibility Guidelines

AcessMonitor LogoOn February 2, 2011, the Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC) made publicly available the beta version of AccessMonitor (text in Portuguese), the automatic evaluator developed by UMIC for the WCAG 2.0 – Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 approved by the W3C – World Wide Web Consortium on December 11, 2008, after a process of more than 8 years of open collaborative development of standards adopted by W3C and after the publication of 15 working versions before the final version. This new tool for assessing compliance with standards of accessibility of websites content, publicly available at no cost, results from the evolution of the tools developed and applied since 2005 by UMIC for the WCAG1.0. In fact, it builds up on the accessibility evaluation tool eXaminator (text in Portuguese) which was developed by UMIC for the WCAG1.0 and is freely available at no charge since December 2005.
